Most if not all rehabs and recovery programs mention family programs on their website, but we have yet to find one who specializes in a full-time complete family recovery program. All of them talk about the importance of family, and even go as far as to say that clients of theirs have a better chance at succeeding if the client’s family is involved with their recovery process.  

What was disturbing to us was that when we searched for a family recovery program, those rehabs and programs had a day or two set aside for family involvement. That is not enough time. The family members need just as much therapy if not more than the actual person who is addicted.  The children who are in the families lives depend upon getting the healing help they need to succeed in their adult lives. We are the only complete family recovery program in the world, as far as we know.

We created Deslongchamps Recovery as a family specialized recovery program because we know firsthand what can happen to families that are exposed to addictions. Research shows that a high percentage of children raised with one or two parents addicted have a likelihood of also being addicted to harmful substances and following in their parents’ footsteps.

Addiction is a family problem it affects the whole family negatively, therefore the whole family must get the healing they need. We promise that the reality after it is too late is heart breaking.  There are no words that can describe what it is like to finally get the help that you need as a parent, and finally get well, to have finally stop engaging in harmful behaviors and addictions, only to helplessly sit by watching your children grow up and do the same thing you did.  The crippling long-term effects might not show up when the kids are younger, but as they get older, when it is too late.  We would not wish that experience on our worst enemy. But at that point, it is too late, all you can do is sit back and watch it unfold.

Again, there are no words to express that experience, knowing that they are the way they are because you were the way you were when they were growing up. Google it, if you do not believe us, find out for yourself. We know that reality and that is why we chose to specialize in family recovery. You will find a lot of information on it.

That is why we deliberately created Deslongchamps Recovery; we know firsthand the devastation addiction has on the whole family. Addiction is a family suffering and therefore must be a family therapy healing mission.

Each family member gets a tailor made, specialized therapy program that is built for them specifically. They have their own team of experts who work directly with them individually, on areas of their lives that have been affected negatively by being exposed to living with addictions.

Even though it may only be one person in the family who is addicted to harmful behavioral addictions, it affects everyone who lives with them, especially the children.

Countless studies have been done on children who are exposed to a parent who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. They suffer at the time it is happening and the suffering grows inside them as they continue into adulthood and shows up in  different important areas of their lives. 

The elevated risk that children of substance abusing parents face in general are poorer academic functioning; emotional, behavioral, and social problems; and an earlier onset of substance use, faster acceleration in substance use patterns, and higher rates of alcohol and drug use disorders.  Just to name a few. They have trust issues, they have a hard time loving because they did not feel worthy as a kid, the list goes on.

The children grow into parents themselves and studies showed that they were severe parenting deficits such as but not limited to less warmth, responsiveness, and physical and verbal engagement as well as harsher and more over-involved interaction styles, greater risk for child maltreatment, and less secure attachment patterns. They treat their children the way they were treated themselves has children.

The family passes addiction down from generation to generation, until it is stopped by one generation getting the help they need and breaking the family pattern.

Studies show that children of addicted parents stand a high risk of becoming addicted themselves, because of the way the brain works and develops before the age of 7. We do what we were taught to do, it is as simple as that.
